In 1966 Fort Leavenworth was designated a Registered National Historic Landmark and a portion of the fort is on the National Register of Historic Places. In an effort to share this historic facility and expand its welcome to visitors, Fort Leavenworth has erected a series of wayside pedestals at 16 historic sites on the fort.
Each stone pedestal displays beautiful artwork and narrative as well as a 2-8 minute recording explaining the historical significance of the site. The historic sites are marked with limestone pedestals containing artwork and electronic recordings. To activate the recordings at each wayside, press the red button on the front of each pedestal. Note: you must have a picture ID (valid driver's license) upon entering the Fort.
To begin the Wayside Tour, travel north on Grant Ave. to the 3rd stoplight, take a right on Reynolds Ave. to the Frontier Army Museum where the 1st Wayside pedestals are located. To continue with the wayside tour, you can pick up the tour with Wayside #2, Command and General Staff College, which is located in front of the new Lewis & Clark Center. Download PDF Map
